Here we are, the very week Aussiecon 4 is going to happen and I make the great trek to Melbourne to take part (both scared and excited in about equal measure). The Con (as we in the biz call it...) will be running from the 2nd September to the 6th September at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre (link to map of where it is). The Guests of Honour are Hugo-winning author Kim Stanley Robinson, award-winning Melbourne artist Shaun Tan (woot!), and dedicated fan Robin Johnson (just to get your interest, maybe...)
As for me, you can see me fumble my way through various topics of which I am only marginally qualified to fumble through at these days/times:
Thu 1600, Rm 217: Wrought from the very living rock: world building in YA spec fic.
Sat 1500, Rm P3: Behold the wonders! Art, design and the visuals in YA spec fic.
Sun 1100, Rm 210: The series question: big books chopped up or small books glued together?
Sun 1600 Rm 211: Let’s get lyrical: poetry in YA spec fic
Mon 1200 Rm 212: The lure of a good map.
Not sure if this is busy or not. Do know that I am very happy to be involved.
I hope I get to see some of you there; make yourself known to me, it might be awkward, but it would be cool non-the-less :) (They say one of the worst things that can happen to a book is to meet its author - let's test the theory, huh...)

Unfortunately, I'm not an Australian resident or I would do just about anything short of downright disgusting to be there for you. Do tell us all about it when you're through?

Good luck at the Con. I'm not going to fly from the States to Melbourne to meet you - but, if Dostoyevsky was still alive, I wouldn't fly to Russia just to meet him, so don't feel slighted. I'd love to meet you if there's a more convenient opportunity some day. If you make a transcript of your talk about "The Series Question," I'd be interested in reading it. I'd like to see a trend away from series novels that seem to wander about with no clear end in sight. Note: I'm not talking about novels like yours, where there may (eventually) be a bunch of novels in the same setting, but where individual books or sets of books still tell self-contained start-to-finish stories. Again, good luck and happy travels.

ReplyDeletejust really disappointed that Dymocks were selling copies of Factotum there, and I missed out on one 'cos they were all gone.
Since I was intrigued by some comments re: your books by my fellow historical miniature gamers (some of whom are building model armies based on material in your books), I have ordered the first book from Amazon Canada (I'm on Vancouver Island off Canada's west coast).
ReplyDeleteHmmm, that was a 46 word run-on sentence . . . my English teachers are probably turning over in their graves (I'm 62 so they probably are in the ground by now).
Anyway, what I've read suggests that you've created a wonderful Imaginary world . . . and I don't care if your books are written for a younger audience, I'm young at heart and look forward to reading them and devouring the appendices.
