Introducing Jay

Today, I would like to introduce a fine fellow I have met in email-land, via his mum (the stellar Rita Faye):

Jay, from Cocoa, Florida.

Howdy, sir, how are you doing? I hope better today.

Now Jay was doing a report on Monster-blood Tattoo for school, which went basically:

"*Research and write a report about the author of the novel. Include information about their life and books they have written. Also include a photo of the author.*"

So, via his mum Rita, he asked me some questions about writing and the book and myself, did a whole lot of hard work and handed in the report early. Better yet, when he got his grade back he had achieved 120 for it! Woo-stinkin'-hoo! Well done, Jay!

Given he had asked me some questions I thought I would ask him some of my own:

Favorite character from MBT?
"Europe, because she can shoot lightning."

Favorite books? (in order...)
"Artemis Fowl series (Eoin Colfer), Monster Blood Tattoo (DM Cornish), Rock Star Superstar (Blake Nelson), Eclipse (Stephanie Meyer), The Supernaturalist (Eoin Colfer)" (How sweet is that - I'm on someone's favourite list!)

Do you like comics?

"Yes, I like comics. For example, I like Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man, The Punisher, manga, and just about everything else." (Makes me think I need to get a graphic novel of MBT happening some day - or better yet some other story from the Half-Continent.)

Now, from what I understand, Jay has a blood and marrow condition which doctors are currently investigating (Rita said I could say this - I hope Jay does not mind) so please have him in your good thoughts, prayers or whatever other positive processes you have. That is kind of why I am introducing to you all - to make his day (I hope) in the midst of tough times. Maybe you could send him a howdy in the comments and answer the questions I asked him (for the illumination of both him and I):

Favorite character from MBT?
Favorite books?
(in order... or not)
Do you like comics? (I include graphic novels in this)

The next book for Jay's project is called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Rita says, "Jay likes it for one of the same reasons he likes MBT; the hero is a young boy that he can identify with. We shall see how he goes." We shall indeed. May you get equally high marks for this, too, Jay!

gday JAY,

well done on the book report, good onya!

Cheers
Bomber

Favorite character from MBT? Europe - cos she's awesome AND cos she shoots lightning from her hands!

Favorite books? No particular order, Lord of the Rings - J.R. Tolkien, Christine - S. King, Monster Blood Tattoo - D.M. Cornish, Stalingrad - A.Beevor, Anything by T. Pratchett, or lately S. Tan, and also The Running Man - M.G. Bauer, The Day the War Began - J. Marsden, After the First Death - Cormier...I'd better leave it there but I have to also add R. Dahl too!

Do you like comics? Not so much anymore, I do like graphic novels though. One of my favourites and this would be rated very highly in any of my favourite texts is The Preacher by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillon. That book would however be considered objectionable.

Hey, excellent work on the book report Jay!

Favourite MBT character: Europe, because she is a strong woman but still has her doubts and insecurities. Also Sallow, because she's searching for what is right for her... and I think she's going to find it.

Favourite books: Wow, too many to mention. I'm a big fan of John Wyndham, particularly the Chrysalids, The Kraken Wakes and The Midwich Cuckoos. Also very taken with Jasper Fforde's hilarious and clever Thursday Next series. And I will never have a bookshelf that doesn't have a copy of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird on it.

Do you like comics? I'm not really familiar with any comics (apart from the Archie comics and Scrooge McDuck comics I used to read when I was 7...)

Sorry, I should add - it goes without saying that Monster Blood Tattoo is on my favourites list! (It goes without saying but I'll say it anyway...)

That truely is great- 120! Congrats, Jay! It's also fantastic that you're being so encouraging to Jay–I'm sure this post would certainly make his day, Mister Cornish! :D

Also, hello hello, I'm Laura, from Australia, and I recently read the first MBT book! I'm very glad I did!

Favorite character from MBT?
That would be Licurius, unusually or not, because he's the sort of character type that I always inevitably like.

Favorite books? (in order... or not)
The Edge Chronicles, The Children of the Red King/Charlie Bone series, The Illmoor Chronicles and Monster Blood Tattoo (of course).

Do you like comics?
Yes, I sure do! I especially like graphic novels and japanese manga (although I'm not as obsessed about it as some). Of manga, +Anima is cute (fairly child-friendly animal-human hybrid story). Graphic Novels in general are cool. A MBT adaption or other story set in its world would be fantastic! (In fact, a visual guide in the distant, distant future would be just as great?)

~Enough blabbing from me!

Finally, old Licurius gets a look in! I sometimes regret killing him off - I find him an interesting character too, and the relationship between he and Europe was/is a complex one.

Laura, you "blab" beautifully.

Thank you! Ironically, those same sort of Licurius-type characters that I like always inevitably find their way to an unfortunate (or not, depending on your point of view) end. I'm still hoping for some more insight into his character in the future via Europe, perhaps, anyway!

Congrats on the mark, Jay!
Greetings, by the way, from lovely winter-bound Canada. I picked up your book a while ago and just couldn't put it down. Like Jay, i'm a younger reader, the US editition of book 2 comes out a month after my 16th birthday and I.Can't.Wait.

Favorite character from MBT?
Have to say that Licurius was my favorite as well (I thought I was the only Licurius-fan out there from reading all the previous posts, but it's nice to see i'm not after all.)for some reason, oddly enough he sounds alot like me.

Favorite books?
Not in any particular order... MBT, obviously, The Book Thief, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Archives of Anthropos, and The Edge Chronicles (again, I thought I was the only one out there...)

Do you like comics?
Yes, mostly manga. Ouran High School Host Club, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, ect. I'm obsessed. A MBT graphic novel would be awesome!
