'Tis The Season to be Chosing (for some anyway...)

Here were are, November and even though I am an Ossee (to use the American pronunciation ;) and having once been a keen student of US history, I have one question burning in my mind:

Obama or McCain?

I wonder what Europe would be like as the ruler of a state? and I wonder what life in a place ruled by the Branden Rose might be like for Joe the Plumber...? Who would you like from the Half-Continent to rule your own land? (Just to keep things a little on topic - is it terrible of me to be so topical?)

Mr Cornish you like US history aswell? I guess it's a whole lot more interesting than Australian history. Anyway if Europe was Prime Minister of Australia I would be off to the US or the UK in a snap. Numps would probably be a good laugh (but I wouldn't want to think what his financial policy would be like.) If I had to choose I would pick the Lamplighter Marshal or the Master-of-Clerks as they are both use to running stuff.

Nice... though I must say that in light of an excellent series of TV documentaries on the history of the beginnings of colonisation/conquest here in Oz I am discovering a new appriciation for this deeply sad but intensely interesting part of our own story.

Emperor- you did well, I must say, but I know it is you now. Last time I got you after one comment didn't i? it took 3 or 4 this time. good job and now I suppose I can tell you - I think rangers apprentice is bad.

*fouracres for prez*

...cause he's honest, nice, depedable, stouthearted, and unlikely to resort to something purely Political to further his own ends [i.e. cover his behiney]

I have to say, if McCain wins, I will readily become a citizen of any other country, including the H-c. As an American citizen, I did my part and voted (absentee and my first time, which was exciting!) and am just as eager as the rest of the world to see who wins this race. To the point, though, I would have to agree with Emperor and say Lamplighter Marshal with a possible Sebastipole as VP (the advantages and disadvantages to having a leer in the White House would be interesting).

I´m not very fond of politicians, but probably Obama. McCain is a bit old and if you think of what happened to Reagan...a president with Alzheimers.

It always amaze me, the dirty campagin they run "over there" but I read in an historic magazine (historic nerd that I am) that this has been going on for over 200 years. Andrew Jacksons wife killed herself because of dirty campaigns.
Problem is that dirty campagins is spreading all over the world. Here in Sweden it´s getting more and more like that too. And the media is doing a good job helping.

But in general I think that people should be more critical towards politicians and not believe every word they say.
I remember when I was over in the US 2005. There was spreading rumours that in Europe americans were almost lynched and all those question I got.. My relatives were worried that you couldn´t have a t-shirt with an american flag on it! I had to explain over and over again cause so many asked about the situation in Europe.

anna- You make a good point about McCain being old. I guess this is the election that wins the prize for "Election where the VPs are most important." Because as you said McCain is old and likely to die soon. And some racist idiot might take a shot at Obama.

Portals- Wow you realize it's me after I say McCain '08 now I know that I'm right wing

The question which person I would have as a ruler in my country...Europe would be fun to have as a queen/PM.

Crista said...

Definitely McCain/Palin!

But if we got to pick someone from the H-c, I’d choose the Lamplighter Marshal. He seems to value common sense and common decency over government regulation – most refreshing…

(This is my first time commenting, so hi everyone! I love your books, Mr. Cornish!)

I enjoy living in a free country, so i'd have to say McCain. Not that I'm crazy about either candidate.

Europe would be a great no-nonsense leader, but she might be a little wrapped up in herself...and I can't see her stooping to the smiling baby-kissing politician level. She's more of a queen than a president.

Anonymous said...

No-nonsense leader works for me. I´m just so fed up with the politicians of today. They just talks and talks and make promises they don´t keep. And lies and cheat and.....

McCain's smile scares me....

Mama Leiger all the way! Who wouldn't want some monsters on their side? But then I guess, I ought not complain about McCain.... Well, monsters are okay, as long as there's someone to keep them in check. (Obviously if I were American I wouldn't want McCain)

I really don't like Kevin Rudd.... Okay guy and everything, but he's a noob at politics and Australia is in a real fix right now.

portals said...

e n Reinmuth-
Yes! Mama Lieger for president.
Emperor- I realised it was you ages ago, not after you said McCain 08.
About endings, Harry Potter has possibly the worst ending in history.

smudgeon said...

Europe as a ruler: pre- or post-Rossamund? I can only imagine the little fellow having a moderating influence on Europe, hopefully in her policies towards people-monster relations...

Although I've always thought Douglas Adams had it (essentially) right: the purpose of the president/leader/ruler is to divert attention away from power - the people with the real power are the bureaucracy. The right people in the right positions will turn any politician into just another instrument.

I assume you've been watching the SBS series, Mr C? I still think of the potential parallels between the H-c & dream-time stories you mentioned through Myspace...

Portals- Harry Potter did have the worst ending of all time. When I read it I just wanted to burn my copy. But really did J.K. actually need to do a good job? It was going to make her extremly rich no matter how well she wrote it. And I just checked the comments from the last post and I hadn't noticed your last comment. So what actually gave it way? (I'm guessing this means we're going to have the change the line to "your brother's old friend's brother use to get shunned on blog sites by his friends")

Mr Cornish- I was just looking at your blogspot profile and I noticed MBT isn't in your favourite book section. Any reason for this?

noelle said...

"Anyone who is qualified to run a country should by no means be allowed to do so." - Douglas Adams says it best.

portals said...

Mr Cornish-
Rossamund seemed much more scared when fighting Gosling in harundo in Foundling than when he battled monsters at Wormstool. Has he grown much more courageous or is he actually more scared of Gosling?

Emperor- I am shocked I did not realise it was you earlier. For one thing, when you told me that Rangers apprentice had been reccomended to me, you remembered the whole comment. You also directed most of your comments toward me.
Say, Your brother's friend's friend's friend's brother's friend's friend's friend doesn't like your brother's friend's brother's brother.

Rowling´s last book, the whole book, felt just like a cut-and-paste book. It fell apart in bits and pieces and I was really disappointed.

Me too anna

Noelle- The comment about living in a free country was really really really cynical. Though I guess true (just on a side note about right wing=freedom. The Labor party (left wing part for non-Aussies) in Australia is censoring the internet. Portals would you like to share with everyone which was the last country to censor the internet?)

Portals- Just noticed your comment from the last post (why do you always have to be RIGHT!??) *Reads Say, Your brother's friend's friend's friend's brother's friend's friend's friend doesn't like your brother's friend's brother's brother.* *Head explodes* I'm guessing the point is you don't like my brother.

To all the people who are aying Harry Potter 7 is bad- Can I join the club?

I don't follow politics since I'm too airheaded for that kind of stuff, haha. But I agree that Keven Rudd is a bit of a joke in the political ... region.

The "Europe for President" statement made me laugh. xD I can just imagine her standing on her 1000 stories balcony, looking down on her country and holding her arms out wide and cackling like those extremely-easy-first-level bosses in video games with a thunderstorm booming behind her. I dunno, I watch too many movies, I suppose. I'd say Numps for president. He's have the entire country as his 'friends'. Hurray!

Damacus said...

hey there, I haven't really posted much but I'm a massive fan.

I've actually been quite impressed by Rudd- I really think the internet censorship was just a hollow promise to win over conservative voters. I'm an "Ossie", but I have to say I prefer Obama- (although Mccain does seem a lot better than george dubya)

As for the H.C elections, I have to agree with Numps for president- he's likeable honest and more mentally sound than most politicians!

ps. Just to add to the choir of discontent: deathly hallows was dissapointing. Especially the epilogue. Please Mr Cornish, Don't end your inspiring trilogy by giving Rossumund a son named Albus Severus!

Anonymous said...

I agree that Deathly Hallows was bad, especially that trite ending. I may not write the best endings for my works (if you can call school essays "works"), but I think I put more effort into an end than Rowling did.

And may I be so bold to ask if everyone on here, except anna and myself, are "Ossies"?

Anonymous said...

Yah Harry Potter's ending was definitely horrible
didn't even seem like Rowling was tring

I vote Lamplighter Marshal for Haacobin president! If Europe set her mind on ruling (something she hasn't done in the books) then I would remove myself from the country ASAP. Politics is bad enough without moody lazhars.

On the note of noob politicians, Obama qualifies. He's never authored or enacted a single piece of legislation. If democrats and socialists (in America the two can mean the same thing) have wrecked our economy and sent American business ethics down the tubes why elect more of them? I'm also for religious freedom, and Obama doesn't strike me as the kind to let Christians adhere to their principles. He's a good orator and he tells folks what they want to hear. Those who tell people what they want to hear should not be in power because they'll abuse it.
In sum, I'd rather have the Misbegotten Schrewd for president than Barack Obama. Should America get him I'll have to trust God's sovereignty.

Who cares if McCain is old? These days we care too much about looks. If he can do the job, let him do it anddoirtwith integrity.
-Ben.
PS: Cornish,2012!

McCain = Socialism, but just for the top 5%.

Portals Rossamünd has grown enough by the end of Book 2 not to be so afraid - if he had met Gosling at that point and the young braggard had tried to hurt him I would fear for Gosling's wellbeing. The development of a character is hard to get right but a lot of fun.

About the ending of Book 3, I will do my best to make it as true and right and strong and satisfying as I can, there will ceratinly be no love-children of Rossamünd and Threnody called Gosling Freckle Bookchild or such like, damacus...

SBS series, yes indeed, me - My sense of the Dreaming is very limited I need to be careful about sourcing it, it is deep culture and I do not want to offend.

And emperor I do not have MBT in my favourites a/ because such blatant self-assertion is probably not the best form & b/ quite simply, they are not among my favourite works - my feelings for them are very different to those for Tolkein or Peake or Lovcraft or all the others I admire.

Howdy ho! crista and welcome!

Obama's policies are socialist. He plans to "spread the wealth around" (his own words) and his platform is based on more regulation, of everything really. My comment of "I enjoy living in a free country" might have been cynical but I don't think it's too far-fetched.

Anonymous said...

sweden has had socialist run for many many years. sure thay have done ok, but I think that because the socialist party has run the country for so long they have gotten blinded for their own faults. And thay have also turned the other way.
Right now we have not the socialist party running the country but "Moderaterna". They like to lower the taxes for rich people and don´t look to the lower levels. it doesn´t matter which one who rules the country cause they have left the reality zone.

Obama rules people.

Has anyone else noticed that McCain can never say anything good about himself, but can only snipe at Obama in all of his time? What a nutjob. I think it's time for a president who has something to say about himself- cue Barack Obama!!!!

OBAMA 08!

noelle said...

So we need a president who can talk about himself? Not the first thing i look for in a candidate...

Anonymous said...

IMHO, neither candidate has given any reason for us to trust a word that comes out of their mouths. talk all they like about whatever they wish--the way this nonsense goes, we will not find out anything true at all until one of em's actually in the white house

Sam Hranac said...

I gotta say, it felt good waking up in America today.

I wish McCain would have won, but hey, you cant win them all lol. Im for Rosamund for Prz. He has no self centerness and is honest in every aspect unlike any politician here in the US. Brandon Rose would also be awesome too. I want the ability to use lightning too, just dont want to have to drink Cathars Treacle.

I think that Europe would make a sweet president or prime minister. Unfortunately I would not have a say yet because I'm under the voting age but it would be exciting to see what she would do.
